Well you did lose a lot of versatile solutions for modern living

Or not!

Our stuff is here!

Woot! It arrived on Tuesday, we have spent the time since unpacking , setting up the sofa, the tv and the wii! The place is filled to the brim with boxes, and I spent an hour and a half tonight playing my favourite songs and getting reacquainted with guitar hero…. on easy I managed Baracuda and The Metal on 100%! and nothing below 97%. Till I got to The Fire and the Flames. Which I got to 85% before getting boo-ed off. Ah well. Tomorrow!

We will post pictures and video at the weekend šŸ™‚

Fourteen Years Later …

Then :

Now :

Nothing has changed much šŸ˜‰

How many people can you spot, its kinda like a Wheres (the) Wally šŸ™‚ (Click on it to see a bigger version)

So we went out for dinner to celebrate our anniversary, we went back to Outback Jacks and
it were well tasty so it was. Ian had nachos and wagu steak. I went for the “Rib and Lace” … a bowl of pasta, followed by ribs and chips, for as many times as you can eat it. So I had a second ribs, they were amazingly tasty.

Three months in …

Well, we have had a fantastic weekend!
Its been really sunny for a whole week now, with temperatures at least 22C each day, and getting to around 27C this weekend. The nights are still a little chilly, but nothing we (and 20 minutes with the oil heater) cant cope with.

We got word on Friday that our stuff had cleared quarantine – Ians boots needed “decontaminated” because of his smelly feet, but they will clean them up and we can collect them in a week or so – but everything else is arranged to be delivered here on Tuesday. I cannot stress the relief that will be! We have coped OK, but we have bare minimum to live with at the moment – 4 plates, forks, knives, cups, garden chairs and the cheapest crappest sofa ikea provides. We are still mostly living in the computer room. But when our stuff arrives we will finally spread out and actually use this place!

So, on Saturday morning we went out shopping and got Ian a new phone – we have been looking for a few weeks, since his stopped working properly and refused to acknowledge the SIM card (we have been using it as an alarm clock since.) The battery on mine cant last overnight, so we both need new phones. On Saturday we got one for Ian, and I had near enough a panic attack – the phone cost $100 (Ā£50) more in the shop than it did online, but the online shops looked particularly dodgy. Apparently I am still not quite over the “dont spend a single penny more than you have to, they might take the house” from the company going under. Looks like it will take more time to get over all that …

Ian is happy though, he loves his new toy šŸ™‚ I will get one soon too. When my heart rate recovers.

We then came back and spent the afternoon in the garden – I did some sun bathing and have ended up a little sunburned on my back. Ian pottered about and cleaned the pool. Then we tried out the pool. Oh my god but it is still cold, it takes a long time to warm up a puddle of water that big šŸ˜‰ We still went in though … but I think we could have caught hypothermia if we had stayed in much longer. Billy Connelly and his “In you go, you big jessy” came to mind šŸ˜‰

We are not that close to anything particularly here – by car is fine, but walking we are a wee bit out of range of most things. But, there is a Botanical Garden about 15 minutes walk, we still havent seen the garden (and the mini golf) yet, but they have a cafe, which on a Friday and Saturday does pizzas. So, we took a walk down there and had tasty pizza and beer and a wander back up. It was fantastic, and we will definately be doing that again.

Walked up the road, grabbed another drink, and sat in the hot tub for half an hour.

What a brilliant Saturday!

Today, we cleared up as they will need space to put our stuff, then, for lunch went to the movies! We had booked seats at the “Gold Class” showing of Wanted. What a refined way to see a movie… private lounge to wait in, you turn up a bit early for the film, peruse the menu, go up and order, and tell them when you want it to arrive. When you go in, you get a giant recliner (electrically operated) and a table for the food and drink to go on. Waiters then bring the food and drinks you ordered, when you asked for! So, we got some tasty starters a glass of wine and a beer about 20 minutes in, and then half an hour after that another set of drinks, and a pizza for us to share. It was fab!

I am so looking forward to the wii getting here!

Anyone bored with their wii fit that they wanna send over? I cant get it for love nor money in the UK atm …..

Last Couple of Nights …

Well, again, in an attempt to find some night life, we were out the last two nights.

Well, we went to see Get Smart last night – we reckon its only got a week till its gone and managed to find a showing that wasnt in the afternoon.

Halfway through, it jumped forward by a few minutes – at the time I thought it was just crappy editing. Except …. right in the middle of the BIG EXCITING END BIT – it died. Much “WTF!” goes on, and they get it back within a couple of minutes, a good 30 seconds of movie skipped. For roughly 90 seconds, when it dies again. For about 15 minutes. When they only skip about 10 seconds – we watched them faff with sellotape. And then, yet again … it died as they were doing the closing scene. So everyone left and they didnt bother trying again. The queue outside was enormous – it was a showing of Wanted and I reckon it was not far from sold out, all waiting outside looking disgruntled.
There was no bother getting a refund – or rather, a “Breakdown Voucher” as this happens enough that they have a “sorry your experience was disappointing because our projector broke down” pre-printed voucher.

Tonight, we went out for dinner to Kulcha Cafe & Noodles House … it was hoaching, so the only table we could get was was beside the toilet. Fair enough …. cept it took them ages to take our order. Sigh. Then our starters arrived, but no cutlery, So, had to ask for cutlery. And then grab a passing waitress to put in a drinks order. The drinks arrived quick enough, and the starters were very tasty.

Then it took them AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGES to bring the mains. And each time staff passed they were studiously avoiding taking away our old plates. Ian was *this close* to throwing them on the floor (he was very grumpy by this point). We finally got our main courses and they were very tasty and HUGE portions. We wouffed them down coz we were rather hungry by then… it was however bloody cheap – two starters, two mains, two bottles of cider for $36 (around Ā£19)

What was the really annoying thing was that on the wall beside us was an extract from this months “Welcome to Perth” magazine saying how great this restaurant was, how the service was “Friendly, courteous and fast”. HA! My arse.

So, basically – we went to the pictures and it broke. We went out for dinner and it was cheap and tasty, but terrible service.

We are now on a mission to eat at loads of restaurants till we find the good ones!

Seriously – Get Skype !!

One of the things that makes being on the other side of the world less of a big deal is the easy access to webcams and stuff.

We are using my laptop webcam for now, and it’s magic – I have been chatting to my Mum most weeks for a bit on the webcam, and it really does make it seem much less of a deal to be so far away.

I also took part in a podcast interview about home automation with a guy in England, and another in Northern Ireland on Sunday there – again using Skype.

I have been a bit of a misery about Skype in the past (it’s using a closed protocol, and not ‘open’ in the slightest), but to be honest… what more do you want for free?

So c’mon folks – get Skype installed. It’s a free download, all you need is a set of earphones and a microphone (cheap headsets from PC World are about a tenner). A Webcam is better, but not needed… and give us a shout online.

Walking the Streets of Perth

Well, Google have the Street View thing working here in Oz as of this morning.
Basically, go to maps.google.com.au, go to Perth, in the top right of the map is wee boxes for StreetView | Map | Satellite | Terrain – click on Street View and zoom in on one of the blue marked streets. You can then drag a wee man and see the street from that position. You can turn round on the spot and see all around, or click forward or back and “walk” down a street.
I am not going to put our address on the incredible edible innernet, for that would be silly. However, if you dont have it yet (or our mobile number) let me know – I did text everyone two weeks back, but I dont think that many people got it.

Street View is well cool, we have spent ages playing with it already and its only been available for a few hours.

My mum had asked about the night life. Well, we havent found it yet. To be fair, there are pubs and clubs – including a local pub that in the height of classiness has a once a month “no wives” night with strippers and topless waitresses. Classy indeed. We were never heavy pub-goers, and its years since we were at the Cat House for a night of moshing, so thats not quite our scene. Most of the shops close between 5-6pm, which is not that great for picking up something after work. The local Co-op equivalent closes at 8pm every night, so we arent ever stuck. The petrol stations are also open 24 hours, so again, if you are hit with munchies at 2am – there is somewhere to get those munchies.

We went out for a drive last night, sat in a car park by the beach with the top down on the car (and the heat up) and did some star gazing. It was pretty awsome – you can actually make out the Milky Way. On the way back we decided to get a bag of chips. Man was that a difficult task – We know our local chippy is open 4pm – 8pm and thats your whack (damn fine chips btw). But we didnt think that would be the case everywhere. We found a couple of places open, a few Subways, couple of pizza shops, but couldnt find a chippie. The places that were open looked like they were closing up as well at 9:30! We found one part of Perth that looked open, but by that time we had decided to head home and just get some toast instead. So – nightlife – I am sure its out there, we just dont know where!

And our stuff finally arrived in the country yesterday.

Which actually came as a bit of a disappoint to us as we were told it had arrived a week ago!

It will take at least two weeks to go through customs, so we were hoping to have it next week, but it will be at least two weeks from now. Sigh.

But its nearly here, we nearly have a tv and a comfy sofa and my Kenwood Chef and pasta machine and decent pots and most importantly the wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

What a Weekend!

Well, the weather seems to have broken a bit – nice sunny weekend, and after our usual shopping trip we headed off to the GO 3 Expo. A Gamers show, where it seems that pretty much everyone in Perth plays Call of Duty 4, and Perth (unlike E3) still employs ‘booth babes’. oh yeah.

Today, we headed off to the Avon Descent – basically a bunch of crazy people throwing themselves down the rapids in rafts, speedboats and canoes. it’s an annual thing, but this year the river is really high, and has burst it’s banks in places. We realised that this was serious when we started to see canoes floating past on their own. yikes.

Still, good fun and on the way back, we managed to solve the Mystery of the Roadside Pumpkins! Yes, it’s time for another video:

The Cost of doing (the) business…

One of the things we had to think about coming out here was the cost of living – the received wisdom is that it’s cheaper to live, that the standard of living is higher. To be honest, the closer we got to flying out, the more concerned we were getting that this really wasn’t the case..

So, here we are two months after arriving – we are paying bills and just getting on with normal life rather than the really unusual ‘is this still a holiday’ feeling. How has it panned out? The exchange rate is currently 2.05 AUD to 1 GBP, so basically, take the prices I am mentioning here and divide them by two, you are pretty much on the money.

Well, there’s the obvious ones – Petrol is cheap cheap. We pay between 1.40 and 1.50 for a litre of fuel, which is insanely low – although, you wouldn’t think so to hear the local press. They are moaning about this as if it was the end of the world. Public transport is not too bad. I spend 3.83 each way on the train each morning: which gets me about the same distance as going from Wishaw to Glasgow Central.

Electricity is about $126 a month – and as you know, we are not light users, what with the computers. We don’t have a gas bill yet, so we have yet to see what the Hot Tub costs to run!

Eating out is expensive – and very, very poor. We have had two hugely dissappointing chinese meals, both with gristley meat, dry chillis added, and bizzare selection of odd veg – cauliflower and broccoli? in a kung po chicken? blech. The indian food is even worse – Angad and Naveen, the two indian guys in the office reckon that it’s just not possible to get a decent indian meal in Western Australia… still, getting back to the point, a pretty poor indian meal (not even as good as you would get from the 3-in-1 on a friday night) set me back about $55, a similarly poor chinese meal was $46.

The exception is steakhouses – they are pretty darn good and seem to be very cheap: The ‘Hog’s Breath’ in Joondalup cost about $40 for plates that were quite a challenge to finish – and tasty too.

Pizza Hut is interesting for the differences – the pizzas are much smaller for one! the ‘large’ Australian pizza is about the same as the medium UK one: they don’t do one as large (except as special promos). They are cheap though – we got Three large pizzas for $13 and ate them over two nights!

There’s a fish and chip shop in the local shopping area, and they do portions that could , in all seriousness, cause a heart attack in one sitting. two ‘scoops’ of chips for $4, which is about 30cm by 30cm when wrapped up… a fish supper (that’s a ‘barramundi’ or ‘red snapper’ supper, of course, not cod or haddock!) is about $12.

We did a big shop today (one of our famous batch cooking sessions to fill up the freezer), and that’s a good chance to show what the prices are like for just normal ‘stuff’. We get our veg from a farmer’s market rather than Woolworths or Coles (asda/tesco in everything but name)…

That lot cost $31 – including $2 for the 2L apple juice and about $4 for the eggs (which are free range – they don’t seem to do any other kind). One thing that’s a little eerie, and I need to point out – the fruit/veg really is that colour – there’s no paint/photoshop trickery here.. The stuff just seems more bright, crunchy.. almost more ‘real’. That’s one thing – we are eating dramatically more wholesome food here in australia – the fruit and veg is delicious, and just seems to taste better.

I guess I should doff my cap to Iain Lawson at this point and admit defeat – it seems that my defence of Tesco etc was misguided!! C’moan the fairmers!

in fact, when we popped to the farmers market today, a wholesale butchers has opened in the next unit so we are using that too. it’s a little like costco’s butchers department in it’s scale, but that’s all it does.

Em and Anna are probably the ones who will get this (being Costco meat junkies like us!) but this lot came to about $160 – which includes $31 for a side (yes, a whole side) of lamb, and those giant packs of chicken ($9 a kilo) The mince is premium lean stuff, and costs about $4 a kilo.

Soft drinks are about $3.50 for a 2L bottle of diet coke – the harder stuff varies a lot: beer is cheap, whisky is, how shall we say it.. not. I found a shop selling Bruichladdich ($79 a bottle) and Bowmore 12 year old ($75 a bottle).

so… basically, yes – the staples of life are a bit cheaper. Our problem came from the fact that we lived out in the boonies, lived very cheaply from low cost supermarkets etc, and wore clothe supplied by George and Matalan… so we started from a fairly low base. I suspect that anyone who lived a slightly more upmarket life in the UK would be finding Perth quite a bit cheaper.

Righty, time to get the next bacth of mega-bolognese on the go…

Wine makes Jenni clever…

So we better get more wine then!

Had a really nice weekend (and here we are almost at the next one and only just writing about it now.. tsk!) last week – we were invited out for dinner on Friday night, which turned into an all nighter, and we slept over.. before rushing back to get the old squad together for a mammoth session on ‘City of Heroes’.

lots of fun – we started about 9pm, 2 in the afternoon for the UK guys, then continued on until the wee small hours: 4.30am! of course, when we woke up in the morning (just), the UK guys were only just finishing off themselves – also at 4am. damn, but that’s one addictive game!

so, where does the Wine come in? well – on the sunday, we had a very pleasant meander through the Swan Valley wine regionĀ (Perth is build around the Swan River) and visited a small vineyard – the absolutely beautiful Henley Park Winery. It’sĀ run by a couple who emigrated here from Denmark, and they have a wine tasting during the day.

A beautiful part of the country, and not that far from civilisation (well, notĀ any further from civilsation than anything is when you are in the world’s most remote city!) – and the vineyards themselves are positively iddylic.

I think we have a new goal in life… šŸ™‚

Apocalyptic Weather!

So, one of the reasons we came here was the weather.

Dont believe it….

There is currently a severe weather warning for Perth. Thunder, gales, HAILSTONES!
Thats right …. HAILSTONES! Balls of ice falling from the sky. Not an unusual occurence for Airdrie, but we were led to believe that Australia was warm and sunny.
Arse!

The houses have no insulation (so much so they sell a tool that helps with laying wires by shining a laser inside the wall so you can see it from the roof space down the inside of the wall coz they havent anything in the way) The bathroom windows have an open bit about 2 inches thats only got a fly screen on it, so just now when its cold wet and windy, its helluva drafty, so we have taped up the one in the en suite.

We got a load of stuff for the garden at the weekend, a lemon, orange and keffir lime tree. Peppers, tomatos, strawbs and so on. Hoping it all survives …..

Anyways. Enough of my stream of conciousness ranting.

I am fighting off a flu, but still went into work today – you only get 2 weeks of sick pay here, so I figured I would prefer to save the sickpay in case I get really sick. Blearg.

So, our big news was *supposed* to be that the ship with all our stuff had arrived in the port of Freemantle, just a couple of miles south of Perth. We had been tracking it across the world, and it was scheduled to arrive yesterday. Yesterday morning we checked the tracking and it was past Perth. Way past Perth. Past Perth enough that there was *no way* it had been in, and back out again that fast. One phone call to the shipping company later, we find out that the ship it was supposed to be on from Kelang in Malaysia had left without our stuff. And without the stuff of a load of other people, in fact, it had decided to leave everything for Perth in Kelang, so they didnt have to stop there.

So, our stuff is stuck in Malaysia. Hey, at least it isnt getting tossed around in the extreme weather…

But most importantly, MY WII IS STUCK IN MALAYSIA!

I WANT MY WII!

CMA Verlaine, and APL Zircon..

Two names that we have become very familar with over the last few weeks.Ā We have been using a couple of cool websites (well, cool for this one purpose – dull as dishwater for anyone else, I am sure!): http://www.sailwx.info and http://www.vesseltracker.com

Our stuff was all loaded by Crown into a container, which was then punted by truck down to Southampton. From there, it was loaded onto the first – the CMA CGM Verlaine, an open deckĀ container ship which sailed to Bruge, to finish getting loaded, then cugged it’s way along the english channel, down through the Bay of Biscay, across the Med to the Mouth of Suez.. along the canal, then out into the Red Sea. It docked at Jedda, then headed out into the Indian Ocean, and east towards the Port of Kelang (Kuala Lumpur).

At this point, our container was unloaded onto the dock, and verlaine continued on to China to pick up it’s next load of stuff en route to Europe. In the mean time, the second ship – the APL Zircon. I don’t have a picture of her, so here’s a picture of her sister ship – the appropriately named APL Scotland.

Zircon left Kelang on the 9th July and began her journey south towards the Port of Fremantle (or ‘Freo’ to the locals), where she is due to arrive on the 15th July…

along with all of our stuff! now we just need to wait on Aussie customs poring over everything and deciding what they do and don’t like the look of, and we should get the Wii back, and the Telly.. and our bikes… and the couch…

sigh. I kinda missĀ our stuff. very Tyler Durden in the whole ‘the things you own, end up owning you’ I know, but dammit, I just want to have a comfy couch to sit on and watch a movie on something other than my PC monitor.

In the meantime, Jen and I have been like a couple of explorers, giving new names to stuff.

First was when we made a spaghetti bolognese from some minced kangaroo.. we could’t quite decide – should it be a boloroo? or a kanganese? in the end, we settled on… Roo-gu! pure genius.

Not as cool as today’s though – we spotted another Skippy-related roadside incident, and Jen came up with a new name for them.. Roo-dkill. heh.

I’ll get me coat…

A perfect day..

So yesterday was a bit wet and miserable. The weather is a bit of a focus for us at the moment, as it is unbelievably cold at nights. My boss Rudy reckoned that this would be one of the coldest winters we had ever experienced… and coming from Scotland I had a good old laugh.

oh boy was he right.

The problem is that Australian houses are built to get rid of heat in the summer. They have white painted walls, tiled surfaces, overhanging roofs to shade the windows.. and not a stick of insulation.

Houses built in the last few years are starting to get (some) insulation – nobody has double glazing, as it’s only needed for sound proofing.. and folks get around it in the winter months by blasting on the gas fires, electric heaters and wood stoves.

I guess the whole idea of building a passive insulated house with decent thermal management to keep the heat in during winter and keep the cold air in during summer will start to kick in as fuel prices continue to rise.. but for this year, in our rented house…

brrr.

We have a couple of DeLonghi dragon electric heaters to keep the bedroom warm, but it’s like being back at our crappy flat in Motherwell. All of the folks we speak to have a little chortle, and say something along the lines of ‘wait till summer…’

That being said – today has been delicious. we nipped out to the local IGA (independent growers of australia – like Spar) to grab some bacon and rolls.. had a delicious breakfast sitting out on the deck… pottered around the house doing some weeding, put the pool cover back on (we had to leave it off for a couple of days, as the chlorine was a bit high), and settled down a lazy afternoon in the hot tub.

Nothing quite like a soak in the hot tub, couple of bottles of cider and just putting the world’s wrongs to right.. the suns just at that lovely ‘last light of the day’ stage just now – everything’s golden orange and yellow.. in fact, here’s a quick photo of the view from my desk – this is looking towards the edge of Joondalup.

So, settling down to read a book and generally chill before dinner. It’s days like this that just make you hapy to be alive šŸ™‚

Ding!

>You have leveled up!

>Adding extra skill points to EVIL.

>EVIL is now at maximum level.

BWHAHAHAHAHAHA
We have tenants.
That makes us landlords.
That makes us evil. More evil!
We have seen all those caricatures and therefore obviously have to live up to it.
Now I need a title higher up the chain than Queen of Evil.

Quick Update

Well, I had an interview today for a business analyst role. I think they liked me, I was in for nearly two hours and got a guided tour. It comes down to the fact that I dont know the tools they use. It is pretty much what I have been doing for years – talk to users and figure out what they want and how to go about getting it for them. Its just the formal way of documenting it that I dont know.

It will be a few days before I hear anything. Once I know something, I will let you know šŸ™‚

One Month and a few days in ….

We had a good weekend, the weather was fab and we used the hot tub a *lot*. Its too cold to use the pool believe it or not, the water just isnt warm enough, but we are coping with the hardship of just the hot tub.

We went to a local steak house for dinner last night (The Hogs Breath Cafe), great steak, huge portions, we will be going back there again šŸ™‚

So, onto todays agency meetings. I did well with agency number one. Then agency number two landed a pop quiz on me and I totally blanked everything I ever knew about programming and couldnt answer a single question. As I left there rather flustered, I got a call from agency number one with an interview for a business analyst role and a developer role with a company in West Perth. So, I am being interviewed by one company for two separate jobs on Wednesday :). Agency 3 was OK, but he wants to wait till I get a clearer picture from the other two agencies as to where my CV is.

Over all, a knackering day. Its been nearly two months since I was in anything other than jeans and trainers, so after today getting suited and booted, my legs and feet are killing me. Thank goodness for the spa!

Skippy!

Couple of folks have asked about Kangaroos – and afterĀ  amonth or so in Australia, we had seen Kangaroos twice. Once on the way up to Lancelin…

And once in the IGA (that’s Independent Growers of Australia, the equivelant of Spar). That one didn’t look too clever either…

So,Ā I asked in the office, got some pointers to ‘Roo country (apparently, driving down any road at night is a surefire way to meet “one of those tough littleĀ bast**ds”, and by “meet” we mean “smack into with the car, spin off wildly and barely survive”)… and are proud to present – Kangaroos!

Yep, yer bona-fide in the wild Kangaroos – just like Deer, actually, and behave the same when startled etc.

One month in ….

Well, its a month to the day since we arrived in Perth, seems like longer!

I have got the finger out and started looking for a job for real.
I hate job hunting, I really do. Not a good thing for a contractor it has to be said given that in theory, I could have had to look for work every three months. Not that I ever did, what with being renewed over and over till they ran out of budget (I think that tells you a lot about contractors and their ability to find and then spend budget šŸ˜‰ ). But, still, I hateses it.

This time round though, with the fact that we are on the other side of the world, I figured a little bit of stability might not go amiss, so I am opting for the permie life for a while.

So, with Ian having been working for 3 weeks and everything that we ordered here being delivered, I couldnt use “I have to be here for the delivery man/pool guy/internet connection bloke” as an excuse any more. I spent a few days working on my CV, got Ian to go over it and then yesterday sent it to 3 agencies. Within 10 minutes I had the First Agent on the phone, my CV in for 6 jobs and a meeting with him for Monday. 5 minutes after that, the Second Guy called, and my CV was in for another job, and he had another two, but it turned out that the First Guy had already put me in for them, and I had a meeting with him on Monday. Another 5 minutes passed and Second Guy called back with another two. It took Third Guy till this afternoon to see my CV, and he has a place to put my CV into, and a meeting with him on Monday.

So …. to recap … thats my CV in for 10 jobs, and I am meeting 3 separate agencies on Monday.

I still hate job searching, but at least this time it looks like it will quick!

Back Online – so here’s a new video!

Well, after a wait that seemed to be measured in weeks, we are in the new house, and have broadband! – we couldn’t really do a blog post for a while, as we were using Jen’s smartphone for web access. sloooooow!

Still, we are now hooked up, and the Hot tub is up and tested (and is as awesome as it sounds!), so here’s a new video:

In the meantime, I have started work so am keeping busy – I need to get a couple of pictures of our new office. I’m travelling into work on the transperth trains, which I am (rather oddly, I guess) actually enjoying. The trains are nice and modern, very regular and the ticketing is quite clever.

I have a ‘smartrider’ card – a little RFID tag which allows me to ‘tag’ on and off of the transport system. You put money on the card, then tag on and off, and it deducts the fare automatically. You get a 15% discount just for using the smartrider rather than buying a ticket, and you get a 25% discount if you link the card to your bank… so, I happily use the tranport system – buses, trains, ferries, and it just pops the fare off each time.

When it reaches a pre-set level, it invoices my bank account for another $50 or so (you set this amount through the website), and that’s that. You can log onto the website and see all of your journeys, and where your tag was used – rather slick.

Nothing for days, then three posts wrapped into one!

Well, it’s been a few days since any blogging, you’d think we had given up, but no!

It’s been a bloody busy few days, with no internet connection…. which has been hard, trust me!

We have finally moved into our own place and out of the rented accommodation. The “holiday” accommodation was fine, but we couldn’t settle at all knowing we were in someone’s basement – one time the owner came down while I was on the loo! He knocked and everything, but still – it was his basement….

Now, we are in our own place (well, still rented, so we can’t knock holes in the walls even when Ian’s SDS drill arrives) and it has made all the difference. We have created a wee walk through for you, but we can’t actually post it yet – it’s another 2 weeks till we get real net access – we are working off my new ozzie mobile phone at the moment. Once we are up for real, we will show you the place from the front door all the way through šŸ™‚ We already have the movie, we just don’t have the bandwidth to upload it.

The last few days gave been hectic – Ian has been at work this week (since Tuesday, as Monday was a holiday – they don’t do the previous Monday that most of the UK does) – and we picked up this place on Thursday, so the past few days for me have been about running around getting stuff we need. Then Thursday Ian bunked off for an hour or so to sign off here ( with me not having a job yet, waster that I am, the car loan, my phone and the house are all in Ian’s name, w00t šŸ˜‰ ) Then it was all day Friday I was waiting on stuff being delivered – washing machine, fridge, giant mega bed, all important PCs from Scotland, temporary desks for the PCs and basic IKEA sofa and dining table.

With having none of our stuff yet – last time we checked it hadn’t actually left the UK, even though we were told it would be leaving shortly after us – we have set up camp in the computer room. Basically we are rattling round a HUGE empty house right now. Once our stuff arrives it will be very different, but for now, it’s settling in one room.

Today (Saturday) was a day of shopping – we were being very Fight Club (ā€œa house full of condiments and no foodā€) so we finally got a load of food, and then on to IKEA for the ā€œreasonably decent, but not as good as our own, solutions for modern livingā€ PC chairs and other stuff. If you didn’t realise that a 207CC has may areas that live within Time And Relative Dimensions In Space (that’s a TARDIS for those that didn’t watch Dr Who as a kid (or maybe even now) ) I can’t believe how much we managed to fit in it …. We have also ordered our very own barbeque – 4 burner plus gas ring in black for our deck. It will arrive on Tuesday.

I did have a ā€œmomentā€ tonight though … I was having a great time, cooking for real for the first time in almost a month, with a glass of wine and I was very much enjoying it, when I thought, ā€œwe should have a house warmingā€ and then I cried a bit šŸ™ Its not the first ā€œmomentā€, but it wasn’t great ….

Gonna sign off this blog post with many congrats to Gerry and Steven on the new baby Finn!
